1898: Plans were complete for Oahu Railway & Land Co.'s new hotel in Waialua, the Pacific Commercial Advertiser reported.
1901: Gay & Robinson is completing its purchase of Lana'i, The Advertiser reported, and plans to graze 60,000 sheep and 10,000 cattle on the island.
1917: The Church of the Epiphany, built of stone taken from its lot on 10th Avenue in Kaimuki, is consecrated.
1922: A Navy seaplane with Gov. W.R. Farrington aboard catches fire on a flight from Maui to O'ahu. The pilot landed the plane off Pearl Harbor and the governor and two pilots swam to another seaplane. No one was injured, but the plane was destroyed.
1946: Three of the largest wholesale companies in the territory report that food supplies in the Islands are at a critically low level because of the Mainland maritime strike. Love's Biscuit & Bread Co., which supplied more than half of Honolulu's bakery goods, laid off 176 workers and curtailed its output because it could not get ingredients.
1954: The F.W. Woolworth store opens at Fort and Hotel streets.
1962: More than 400,000 Hawai'i residents take the first installment of the anti-polio Sabin vaccine. The vaccine was given in sugar cubes.
1982: The Hawai'i Supreme Court rules against the controversial Nukolii development, affirming the right of the voters on Kaua'i to make land-use decisions.
2000: Miss Hawai'i Angela Perez Baraquio is crowned Miss America 2001 in Atlantic City.
