BYUH sweeps Hilo in volleyball

Michelle Peters had 16 kills and 16 digs as No. 9 Brigham Young-Hawai'i defeated Hawai'i-Hilo, 30-15, 30-20, 30-23, last night in a Pacific West Conference women's match at La'ie.

Faylynn Merrick added 13 kills, Noelle Filimoeatu contributed 12 kills and Roseanne Vea had 10 kills and 15 digs for the Seasiders (14-0 overall, 11-0 in the PacWest).

Taina Savage had 15 kills and 13 digs for the Vulcans (5-12 and 3-5).

UH SPLITS EXHIBITIONS

The University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team opened its fall exhibition season last night by splitting a pair of matches at the University of British Columbia tournament in Vancouver, B.C.

UH beat New Brunswick, 25-18, 25-23, 25-23, in the first match, then lost to British Columbia, 25-22, 25-22, 25-22.

Outside hitter Steven Grgas led the Warriors with 14 kills in the win over New Brunswick. Outside hitter/middle blocker Jacob Schud had seven kills in the second match.

The tournament concludes today.


TENNIS

SEASIDERS PLACE THIRD

Brigham Young-Hawai'i's Julia Ustyuzhanina and Ramona Husaru finished third yesterday in the Wilson/ITA Small College Championships at Fort Myers, Fla.

The Seasiders defeated Inga Chilingaryan and Yumi Matsuto of California University of Pennsylvania, 6-3, 4-6, 10-5, after losing in the semifinals earlier in the day. West Florida's Tammy Kevey and Mandy Septoe beat the Seasiders, 6-4, 4-6, 10-6, and went on to capture the NCAA II doubles title.

In singles play, Kevey beat Ustyuzhanina, 6-4, 6-1, in a semifinal match. Ustyuzhanina will play in the third-place match today.


SOCCER

CHAMINADE DROPS 3

Steve Wondolowski had a goal and an assist as UC Santa Cruz defeated Chaminade, 5-0, yesterday in a men's soccer match at Santa Cruz, Calif.

The Fighting Banana Slugs improved to 13-1.

Darren Smith made 12 saves for the Silverswords (0-10).

On Thursday, Notre Dame de Namur defeated the Chaminade men's team, 3-0, and also beat CU's women's squad, 2-0, in Pacific West Conference play at Belmont, Calif.

Smith made five saves for the CU men while Michelle Halloran made 16 saves for the CU women (0-6-1 overall, 0-4-1 PacWest).


BASKETBALL

WHITING UP FOR HONOR

Chaminade senior Zack Whiting has been nominated for the Bob Cousy Award, which is presented to the top college point guard regardless of level.

Whiting averaged 14.1 points, 8.1 assists and 5.0 rebounds a game last season for Chaminade, an NCAA Division II program.

The Silverswords won the Pacific West Conference with a 9-3 record last season and finished 19-9 overall.

Whiting is a two-time All-PacWest first-team selection and a Daktronics All-West Region selection.

Others nominated for the award include Connecticut's A.J. Price, Arizona's Mustafa Shakur and UCLA's Darren Collison.

The award is presented annually by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
