Hawaiian Telcom urged customers to use their phones only when necessary to avoid overloading the system. The state's telephone company said today it experienced little or no interruption of service to its 650,000 phone lines statewide, although power outages kept some residents from calling out.
Dan Smith, spokesman for Hawaiian Telcom, said the phone system's batteries kicked in immediately after the twin quakes brought down electrical power statewide.
Smith said the phone company is working to get its generators working to power its systems.
