Airports backed up, many flights canceled

Advertiser Staff

United Airlines canceled several out-bound flights while passengers at Honolulu International Airport struggled through long lines caused by power outtages, said Marsha Wienert, state tourism liaison.

United, and some of its partners, canceled Maui flights to Chicago, Los Angeles and San Francisco today: a Chicago and two Los Angeles flights out of Kona and a flight to Chicago and Denver and two to Los Angeles and two to San Francisco leaving Honolulu, Wienert said.

All arrivals were canceled except for two flights: United 73 from San Francisco and United 83 from Los Angeles. The flights were scheduled to arrive at 4 p.m.

Hawaiian Airlines reported that all flights leaving from airports in Hawai'i have been delayed but not cancelled.

"People should expect severe delays," said Keoni Wagner, Hawaiian's spokesman.

Flights from the Mainland to Hawai'i are leaving on time, but getting through the airport in Hawai'i may be slow, Wagner said. It's taking a long time to deplane because the jet bridges are not available and passengers are coming down mobile stairs.

Wagner said people who had reservation to leave from Hawai'i airports today, should stay home and reschedule at a later time. The airline will waive any fees.

Aloha Airlines' computer system is working but Hawaiian Airlines' is down and operating on emergency generator power, Wienert said.

Some security checkpoints also lack power, as well as the agricultural inspection station. So dogs are checking luggage for agriculture.

At Honolulu domestic terminal, Wienert said, "everyone is being funneled through one checkpoint so there is a lot of back-up at the airport right now."
