Nu'uanu Valley residents asked to conserve water

Advertiser Staff

Residents in upper Nu'uanu Valley are being asked to conserve water today as the Board of Water Supply replaces a pump motor that burned out when it was restarted after the blackout caused by yesterday's earthquake.

The pump is located in a booster station but only the motor is affected so it will be replaced, said Su Shin, spokeswoman for the water company.

"A safe estimate is that we'll have it fully restored by morning," Shin said. "Upper Nu'uanu will probably be without water for most of the day." A water wagon is located on the Old Pali Road near the old Midkiff home and two more are being dispatched, Shin said. Shin applauded residents for their patients yesterday.

People's response to a request to conserve water yesterday ensured that everyone had enough water throughout the blackout and the Board of Water Supply wants to thank the public, Shin said.

With the long outage, the water company expected water to run out, but it didn't because people conserved, she said. The conservation also helped with sewage disposal, Shin said. Environmental Services saw a drop in wastewater intake to the sewage system, she said.

People experiencing problems with water can call the water company's trouble line at 748-5010.
