Honolulu diocese reports quake-damaged churches

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Honolulu has released a list of churches on the Big Island that have been damaged.

The diocese reports damage to:

  • St. Joseph Mission in Pa`auilo, Big Island: beams cracked, side wall collapsed in the choir aire and bathrooms damaged; the parish hall also shifted during the quake. It's being declared unsafe, no Masses will be held.

  • Our Lady of Lourdes in Honoka`a: parking lot wall collapsed.

  • St. Michael Church in Kailua-Kona: cracks to the bell tower and interior plaster walls; statue of Mary fell and broke. Sunday Masses were held outside.

    Also, officials with Honpa Hongwanji report no damage to any of its temples across the state, incluiding the 13 on the Big Island.
