Advertiser Staff

From 5:30 to 7:30 today the American Red Cross will be providing hot meals, water and cleanup kits at its Big Island distribution site in the Waikoloa Village district at the Waikoloa Village condominiums Paniolo Club for local residents impacted by Sunday's earthquake.

In addition to bottled water, the Kona Wal-Mart has donated cleanup kits containing mops, buckets, brooms, soap, among other things, to help in the relief effort.

Hot meals will also be available this evening. In addition, case workers will be on hand this evening to meet and counsel with families concerning their immediate needs.

The Red Cross will deploy a mobile canteen this evening in North Kohala to distribute water and sandwiches.

Since Sunday, Red Cross workers from Hawai'i, O'ahu and Maui have been assisting Civil Defense authorities in assessing damage on the Big Island so that appropriate recovery strategies can be implemented to assist local residents.

The Red Cross opened shelters following Sunday's earthquakes. The shelters have now been closed as occupants sought refuge with friends and family.

The Red Cross is also maintaining a toll-free hot line at (877) 377-5053 to assist residents who have had damage to their homes and/or have been disconnected from their families.

All Red Cross assistance to disaster victims is free.
