Two Schofield soldiers die on Iraq battlefield

By William Cole

Two Schofield Barracks soldiers with the 3rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team were killed in combat and two others were wounded on Sunday while conducting operations in Kirkuk province, according to the Multinational Division-North headquarters in Iraq.

The wounded soldiers were taken to a coalition forces hospital.

The names of the dead are being withheld pending notification of family.

With the Schofield deaths, eight U.S. soldiers and three Marines were killed in Iraq during the weekend.

According to the Web site icasualties.org, which tracks Iraq statistics, 59 U.S troops have been killed so far in October.

Seven soldiers with the 25th Infantry Division have been killed in Iraq during a new deployment for more than 7,000 Hawai'i soldiers.

The first five deaths occurred in or near Hawija, southwest of Kirkuk, a hotbed of Sunni resistance.

Hawija is in Kirkuk province, but military officials did not identify where the latest two deaths happened.

Last Wednesday, a grenade landed in Capt. Shane T. Adcock's Humvee, killing the 27-year-old married man, his family said. Another soldier suffered a concussion, and a third suffered shrapnel injuries and was being treated in Germany.

Another American killed in Hawija was a DynCorp International contractor from Maine, who was struck by a sniper's bullet on Sept. 17. Darrell Wetherbee, 46, was an Iraqi police liaison officer and part of a State Department team working with Hawai'i troops.
