Chaminade volleyball beats Grand Canyon

Trina Kauliakamoa and Vanja Radanovic each hammered 19 kills as Chaminade defeated Grand Canyon, 24-30, 33-31, 30-27, 30-23, last night in a Pacific West Conference women's volleyball match at Phoenix.

Radanovic hit .613, burying her 19 kills in just 31 attempts with no errors. The Silverswords hit .377 for the match in improving to 13-4 overall and 8-2 in the PacWest.

Evelyn Bluthenthal added 13 kills and 16 digs, Brittnee Fonnesbeck had 11 kills and five blocks, and Marijana Stanic contributed 17 digs for Chaminade.

Tonya Rooth had 19 kills and Dana Edington had 14 kills and 11 digs for the Antelopes, who fell to 13-12 overall and 5-6 in the PacWest.

SEASIDERS STILL NO. 9

The undefeated Brigham Young-Hawai'i women's volleyball team remained No. 9 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association Division II national rankings released yesterday.

Truman (27-1) is ranked No. 1. The Seasiders (16-0) are one of only three undefeated NCAA II teams in the nation. The others are third-ranked Cal State-San Bernardino (20-0) and fourth-ranked Hillsdale (23-0).


GOLF

FUJIKAWA TRIUMPHS

Moanalua High sophomore Tadd Fujikawa went wire-to-wire to win the Turtle Bay Amateur on Sunday, shooting a final-round 7-under-par 65 to hold off 54 other Championship Flight golfers.

His two-day total was 10-under 134. The previous tournament record was 9-under, set by former University of Hawai'i golfer Matt Kodama.

UH junior Travis Toyama (67—137) took second. Punahou junior Alex Ching (69—140) was third.

Rodney Doo (72—148) won A Flight. Stephen Gill (79—160) beat Brent Nakaoka (82—160) in a B-Flight playoff and Hal Takahashi (92—174) won C Flight.

WISE SHARES LEAD

New Mexico State senior Lehua Wise, a 2003 Kaua'i High graduate, shot even-par 72 yesterday to share the first-round lead of the Price's Give 'Em Five Invite at the New Mexico State course in Las Cruces, N.M.

University of Hawai'i golfers Lisa Kajihara and Corie Hou each shot 1-over 73, putting them in a tie for fifth.

The Rainbow Wahine shot a 13-over 301 to stand in third place in the 17-team field. San Jose State leads at 8-over 296.


SAILING

UH SAILORS THIRD

The University of Hawai'i coed sailing team finished third in the Pacific Coast College Sailing Conference Sloop Championships Saturday at Lake Isabella, Calif.

USC won the six-team event with a low-best 11 points, followed by UC Irvine (12), UH (22), Cal Maritime (23), UC San Diego (24) and UC Santa Cruz (35).

Mike Scott, Mark Spector and Ryan Wild sailed for the Rainbows, who won one of the six races.


TENNIS

LAM FALLS IN QUALIFYING

Donald Young swept Honolulu's Chris Lam, 6-3, 6-2, in the semifinal qualifying round of the $50,000 Calabasas Challenger in California on Sunday.

Lam, ranked 869th in the world in his first year as a pro, beat Henry Adjei-Darko of Ghana, 6-1, 6-4, in the qualifier's opening round. Adjei-Darko was ranked 393rd and Young 566th.

Lam plays next in the Waikoloa Futures qualifying, Nov. 4 on the Big Island. He concludes his year at the Hono-lulu Futures (Nov. 11 to 19) and the Wailea Men's Challenger (Nov. 25 to Dec. 3).


BASEBALL

WINTER GAMES TONIGHT

Hawaii Winter Baseball games postponed Sunday will be played today.

Today's games will feature the West Oahu CaneFires against the North Shore Honu at 6:30 p.m. at Hans L'Orange, and the Honolulu Sharks against the Waikiki BeachBoys 7 p.m. at Les Murakami.

The regularly scheduled games for today — BeachBoys vs. CaneFires and Honu vs. Sharks — will be rescheduled to another date.

The CaneFires vs. Honu game rained out Saturday also will be rescheduled.
