Water main breaks, crash greet morning commuters

Advertiser Staff

This morning's rush-hour is off to a less than perfect start due to a number of problems.

Atkinson Drive is closed between Ala Moana and Kapiolani boulevards because of two separate water main breaks. A water main break is also slowing traffic on School Street just ewa of the Likelike Highway intersection.

Two west-bound lanes of the Moanalua Freeway were closed following a collision at about 6 a.m. that left one of the vehicles involved flipped on its side blocking the two right lanes. Police were urging drivers to use the airport viaduct instead.

Meanwhile, inbound traffic on the H-1 Freeway was backing up prior to the Waikele shopping Center. The H-1/H-2 merge is moving at a crawl at this time and the congestion continues until well past the Waimalu on-ramps.

Traffic thins out a bit in 'Aiea and moves well through the airport viaduct, but stacks up again at the Middle Street merge, which is bumper-to-bumper at this time. The congestion continues through Kalihi and Liliha but eases up some once past the downtown exits.

The drive in from Hawaii Kai is a slow one this morning, with the freeway backup extending back onto Kalanianaole Highway at this time.

No major problems have been reported heading in from Windward O'ahu.
