1886: The Pacific Commercial Advertiser reports on the lavish 11th birthday lu'au for Princess Ka'iulani, who was born on Oct. 16, 1875. King Kalakaua attended, as did Princess Lili'uokalani. The king's birthday present to the young princess was $50 in gold, The Advertiser reported.
1922: The Advertiser reports that the hulk of the liner City of Honolulu, which had been destroyed by fire at sea the previous week, has been sunk by gunfire from a Navy cutter.
1923: The Advertiser reports that Kapahulu residents want the dairies in the area moved. They were tired of the barnyard sights, smells and sounds.
1931: Inventor Thomas Edison dies in New Jersey.
1937: The 900,000 Kamehameha I three-cent commemorative stamps that are sold break the national record for first-day stamp sales.
