ISLAND LIFE SHORTS
Gotta love Gosling in 'Half Nelson'

Advertiser Staff

Ryan Gosling, right, plays a young teacher who strives to inspire his students in "Half Nelson."

We still love our Magnolia Bakery cupcakes like McAdams loves Gosling. (If that's Greek to you, it's a reference to the "Saturday Night Live" sketch "Lazy Sunday.") But in the critically hailed 2006 indie flick "Half Nelson" we get to fall in love with a brilliant Ryan Gosling, too. In a performance worthy of Oscar-attention, Gosling plays a Brooklyn middle-school instructor trying to inspire his students while fighting his own brutal battle with drugs away from the classroom. Rachel McAdams is nowhere in sight, and, thankfully, so are any Lifetime afternoon movie melodramatics. Rated R, 7:30 p.m. today at Doris Duke Theatre, Honolulu Academy of Arts. 532-8768.
