The Oct. 19, 1913, Pacific Commercial Advertiser comments on concerns about improving Waikiki Beach for tourists.

1865: Robert C. Wyllie, minister of foreign affairs of the Kingdom of Hawai'i, dies at his residence at Rosebank, Nu'uanu Valley, Honolulu.

1914: The Advertiser reports that German troops probably destroyed the monument to Father Damien in Louvain, Belgium. On Oct. 20, 1916, The Advertiser reported on a letter from Brother Dutton, who passed on the news that the museum in Louvain had been burned by the Germans. Many of Father Damien's effects had been sent to that museum after Damien's death.

1925: The territory files a condemnation suit for 176 acres of Damon Estate property for an airport.

1946: The Maui chief of police says 21 strikers were arrested for unlawful assembly on the grounds of the Maui Agricultural Co. Workers at sugar plantations throughout the territory had been on strike since Sept. 1.

1965: Gov. John A. Burns announces plans to begin immediate construction of the new state Capitol.

1968: Four people are killed and 39 injured when a loaded tour bus slams into a rock embankment on Chain of Craters road.

1987: The Dow Jones industrial average falls 508.32 points. The Dow closed at 1,738.42.

1999: A Pentagon report that acknowledges Hawai'i was one of the sites where nuclear weapons were stored during the Cold War is made public.

1999: Ceremonies mark the formal completion of Hokule'a's historic voyage to Rapa Nui.
