Advertiser Staff

The Van Gogh Club will present "Ho'ulu Hou: A Silent Auction & Book Publishing Fundraiser for Poet Wayne Kaumualii Westlake" from 5 to 9 p.m. today at thirtyninehotel, 39 Hotel St. in Honolulu.

Westlake, who died in 1984 at age 36, broke ground as a concrete poet, who translated Taoist classical literature and Japanese haiku, but incorporated perspectives from his Hawaiian heritage in his writing, poetry and art.

Tonight's event features music by DJ Doug, Umi Perkins, Kua'aina and Jerome James. A silent auction offers a range of art pieces, paintings, photographs and books donated by artists who are friends and colleagues of Westlake.

Proceeds will help the University of Hawai'i Press publish a book of Westlake's writings.

Admission: $20 in advance, $25 at the door.
