'Aiea captures OIA boys, girls championships

PEARL CITY—'Aiea High swept the O'ahu Interscholastic Association boys and girls team bowling titles yesterday at Leeward Bowl.

Furthermore, Na Ali'i senior Shane Dagdag won the boys' individual championship with a six-game total of 1,313 pins.

Pearl City High junior Jordeen Koizumi captured the girls' singles title with 1,272 pins.

"It feels pretty good," said Dagdag, runner-up to last year's champion, James Pirtle of Pearl City. "Everybody was telling me this would be my year."

Dagdag, who had a league-best 215 average during the regular season, saved his best game for last, rolling a 240, after opening with a 191. He picked up the pace following with 224, 222, 213 and 223.

Pirtle was second at 1,264.

Koizumi was the opposite, setting the tone early by rolling a 241 in her first game. She was steady thereafter, rolling 214, 213, 193, 209 and 202 to hold off 'Aiea's Lianne Deeter's runner-up score of 1,171.

"I was relaxed," Koizumi said of her strong start. "I have good coaches, too."

Medals were awarded to the top 15 boys and top 15 girls.

In the girls' team tournament, the West champion Na Ali'i defeated East runner-up Kalani, and East champion Moanalua beat West runner-up Mililani, both by 3-0 scores in the semifinals. 'Aiea then beat Moanalua, 3-0 for its third consecutive team championship.

'Aiea's girls team consists of Deeter, Darcie Oyama, Adrienne Pang, Ashley Primacio, Holly Somera and Shelsy Lonso. Three of them had scores in the top six in winning individual medals. Only the top five scorers' counted toward the team totals.

Meanwhile, 'Aiea's boys ended a four-year drought. Runners-up in the West, they defeated division champion Waipahu, 2-1 for the championship.

'Aiea ousted East champion Kalani, 3-0, and Waipahu bested Castle, 2-1, in the semifinals to advance.

Na Ali'i's boys team is made up by Dagdag, Bradley Nishibata, Kyle Pekelo-Passmore, Zachary Remigio and Justin Tanodra. Four of them finished in the top 15 to win individual medals.

Since the team and individual championships are run concurrently, the same scores the individual bowlers rolled also counted toward their team totals. The first three games were used for the semifinals with the final three used for the championship.

The state championships are set for Nov. 9 and 10 on Kaua'i.
