Kalani upsets 'Aiea in OIA girls volleyball playoff

'AIEA — Melia Iwamoto and Violet Alama had 12 kills apiece to lead Kalani (9-5) to a 23-25, 25-18, 25-22 upset of Western Division champion 'Aiea (11-2) Saturday in the quarterfinal round of the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Girls Division I Volleyball Tournament at 'Aiea's gym.

Kalani, the fourth seed from the Eastern Division, will meet East No. 2 Roosevelt, Thursday, 6 p.m. at McKinley. The game will be televised statewide by OC-16. Kahuku (11-3) plays Moanalua (12-1) in the other semifinal at 7:30 p.m.

All fours teams earned berths in the HHSAA state tournament, Nov. 6-9, on O'ahu. 'Aiea and McKinley, who will meet for fifth place, also qualified for the state tournament.

'Aiea beat Pearl City, 15-25, 25-21, 25-20, in a consolation semifinal that immediately followed the match.
