Postal worker killed in accident

Advertiser Staff

A 50-year-old mail carrier who died today after hitting a lamppost with her U.S. Postal Service vehicle may have had a medical condition, police said.

The accident happened about 11:53 a.m. on Halemaumau Street in Niu Valley.

Traffic police said the woman was slightly weaving just before the crash, when she veered and hit a lamppost. The impact of the crash sheered the lamppost off, and when the woman was ejected onto the sidewalk it fell on top of her, police said.

Police said the woman, of Hawai'i Kai, was taken to The Queen's Medical Center with severe head injuries, where she was pronounced dead.

Speed and alcohol were not factors in the crash. The victim was not using a seatbelt.

The fatality is the 76th of the year so far, compared to 60 at the same time in 2005.
