The Oct. 21, 1896, Pacific Commercial Advertiser reported the government was considering a pardon for Queen Lili'uokalani.

1858: The Pacific Commercial Advertiser reports the first-ever shipment of ice has arrived in Honolulu.

1909: One hundred and fifty Russian laborers arrive in Honolulu.

1946: Capital Investment Co. completes negotiations for the purchase of the Waianae Co. sugar plantation and ranch.

1985: Ronald Rewald is convicted of 94 counts of fraud, perjury and tax evasion for taking more than $20 million from about 400 investors in Bishop Baldwin Rewald Dillingham & Wong. A jury rejected Rewald's claim he did it all for the CIA.

1994: The University of Hawai'i Special Events Arena, later renamed the Stan Sheriff Center, opens.
