Kanahele's response on governance

Advertiser Staff

Office of Hawaiian Affairs candidate Dennis "Bumpy" Kanahele said any Hawaiian governing entity should have the consent of the Hawaiian people.

In response to an Advertiser question, "Do you favor Hawaiian self-determination? What form should it take?" Kanahele responded:

"Yes. Any legislation, without the full consent of the Native Hawaiian people and full self-governance usurps the intent, spirit and foundation of self-determination."

Kanahele, 52, is a resident of Waimanalo and is managing director of Malama First.

Kanahele's response did not appear in an Oct. 18 Advertiser story on the OHA election.
