Hawai'i team fourth in world surfing meet

Hawai'i is in fourth place in the team standings entering the final two days of competition in the ISA World Surfing Games.

The sixth day of the eight-day contest was completed yesterday in 1- to 3-foot waves at Huntington Beach, Calif.

Five Hawai'i surfers are still in contention for individual championships: Gavin Gillette and Sebastian Zietz in the open men's surfing division; Bethany Hamilton and Lani Hunter in the open women's surfing division; and Bonga Perkins in the longboard surfing division.

Gillette, Hamilton, Hunter and Perkins are still undefeated in their respective divisions.

Perkins is in the best position among the Hawai'i competitors, having secured a spot in the semifinals with his third-round victory yesterday.

Zietz was a standout in the open men's repechage heats yesterday, advancing through three heats. His two-wave total of 13.57 was the top score of the sixth round of repechage heats.

Four Hawai'i competitors were eliminated yesterday.

Shane Valiere lost in the third round of the open men's repechage; Alex Smith lost in the fifth round of the open men's repechage; David Hubbard lost in the fifth round of the men's bodyboarding repechage; Chasity Baltazar lost in the third round of the women's bodyboarding winners' bracket and then lost in the third round of the repechage.

Brazil is currently in first place, followed by Australia and the United States. Hawai'i is recognized as its own country for the contest.


GOLF

SHIMOMURA TAKES LEAD AT OCC TOURNAMENT

Kevin Shimomura shot a 4-under-par 67 en route to a three-shot lead after the second round yesterday in the 43rd annual Oahu Country Club Men's Invitational.

Shimomura, a former University of Hawai'i-Hilo golfer, is at 6-under 136 entering today's final round. Craig Uyehara shot a 70 and was at 139. First-round leader Tadd Fujikawa shot a 73 and was at 141.

Alvin Okada (68) was at 142 and Samuel Rodriguez III (69) was at 143.

The low 30 scores and ties advanced to the final round, which begins at 11 a.m.

Tom Goodbody won the 36-hole senior division, shooting a 74 for a 146. Art Costas was second with a 73-148.

"Outta Cynk" won the team division for the fourth time in five years with a 293-289—582. Team members were Shimomura, Rodriguez, Kellen-Floyd Asao, Neal Takara and Troy Higashiyama.

VULCAN WOMEN SECOND IN MONTEREY TOURNEY

The University of Hawai'i-Hilo shot a three-round 989 to finish second yesterday at The Golf Mart/Lady Otter Invitational at the Black Horse Golf Course at Monterey, Calif.

The Vulcans finished three strokes behind Cal State Chico. Host Cal State Monterey Bay finished third at 1,008.

Grand Canyon's Jessica McKay was the medalist with an 80-232. Jayna Shimomura was UH-Hilo's highest finisher at 90-242, good for fourth. The Vulcans' Kiilani Matsuyoshi was tied for ninth after a 83-250.


VOLLEYBALL

BYU-HAWAI'I SWEEPS, REMAINS UNDEFEATED

Faylynn Merrick had 13 kills and Noelle Filimoeatu added 11 to as No. 9 Brigham Young-Hawai'i remained undefeated with a 30-24, 30-28, 30-23 Pacific West Conference victory over Hawai'i Pacific last night at La'ie.

The Seasiders is 17-0 overall and 13-0 in the PacWest. The Sea Warriors are 5-14 and 3-8.

Lesina Funaki had 21 digs to lead BYUH.

Barbara Martin had a team-high 14 kills for HPU.

CHAMINADE SWEEPS NOTRE DAME DE NAMUR

Brittnee Fonnesbeck had 10 kills and Tamara Kauliakamoa added 12 digs and 40 assists to lift Chaminade to a 30-22, 30-16, 30-21 victory over Notre Dame de Namur yesterday in a Pacific West Conference women's volleyball match at Belmont, Calif.

Chaminade is 15-4 overall and 10-2 in the PacWest. Notre Dame de Namur is 10-20, 0-11.

The Silverswords had 10 aces, including three by Kauliakamoa.

HAWAI'I BAPTIST, PUNAHOU GIRLS WIN

Hawai'i Baptist defeated St. Francis, 25-20, 25-19, yesterday to advance to the semifinals of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division I girls semifinals.

Punahou defeated Mid-Pacific, 25-11, 25-21, to also advance to the semifinals.

Kamehameha and Iolani play today with the winner facing Hawai'i Baptist and the loser facing Punahou on Tuesday.


TENNIS

RAINBOWS' CAPPELLA FALLS IN ROUND OF 64

Hawai'i's Samanta Cappella lost to 16th-seed Nikola Dimitrova of UNLV, 6-0, 6-0, in the round of 64 in the women's Wilson/ITA West Regional Championship yesterday at San Diego.

Hawai'i's Sabita Walkup defeated H.R. Espiritu of UC Riverside, 6-0, 6-0, in the women's consolation round of 32.

UH's Kana Aikawa lost her round of 32 match to Stefanie Wetmore of UCLA, 6-3, 6-3.

In the doubles round of 32, Walkup and Jacqui Williams lost to top-seeded Alex McGoodwin and Riza Azalameda of UCLA, 8-1.

UH'S HEINEMANN, WEBER IN ROUND OF 32

Andreas Weber and Sascha Heinemann of the University of Hawai'i advanced to the round of 32 with victories yesterday at the Wilson/ITA Northwest Region Championship at Stanford, Calif.

Weber stopped Tim Lantin of Sacramento State, 6-1, 2-6, 6-4. Heinemann defeated Moritz Starke of Pacific, 7-6 (2), 2-0, retired.

UH's Derrick Lajola, Matt Seeberger, Chad Faulk and Jeff Fitch lost in the round of 64.

Faulk and Lajola defeated Nic Amaroli and Peter De Moral of UC Davis, 8-6 and Fitch and Heinemann defeated Valclav Burger and Ken Nakahara of California, 8-6, in the doubles round of 64.


AIR RIFLERY

PEARL CITY SWEEPS OIA TEAM, INDIVIDUAL TITLES

Pearl City successfully defended its boys title and also won the girls title at the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Air Riflery Championship yesterday at Pearl City.

Alex Cachero of Pearl City won the boys individual title with 261 points, edging Leilehua's John Rosales who scored 260. Pearl City's Lelan Aranaydo was third with 255 points.

Pearl City defeated Roosevelt, 1,694-1,598, for the boys title.

The Chargers defeated Kalani, 1,678-1,621, for the girls championship.

Jolana Gollero of Pearl City won the girls title with 259 points, followed by Teralyn Chang of Kalani (257) and Emi Nakayama of Kalani (253).

The Civilian Marksmanship Air Riflery State Championships are Oct. 31 at Blaisdell Center.
