1936: The Hawaii Clipper arrives in Honolulu. It is Pan American Airways' first flight with paying passengers from San Francisco to Hawai'i.

1945: Composer Irving Berlin appears with the cast of the all-soldier show "This is the Army," at Honolulu Stadium. It was the finale of the hit show's 70,000-mile, 39-month world tour.

1963: Walter F. Dillingham dies at the age of 88. He assumed the helm at Oahu Railway and Land Co. after his father's death and went on to found or lead a series of highly influential local businesses, including Hawaiian Dredging Co., Young Brothers, Bishop Trust Co. and the Oahu Sugar Co. He also built Ala Moana Center.

1979: Almost 8,000 blue-collar state and county workers on six islands go on strike. Schools are closed and Hawai'i National Guardsmen take up positions outside state prisons and the Hawai'i State Hospital.

1983: A 12-day strike against two major O'ahu dairies ends. The strike caused delays in milk delivery and shortages of cottage cheese and yogurt.

2000: After 15 years on surfing's world tour, Hawai'i's Sunny Garcia clinches his first Association of Surfing Professionals world championship by placing third in the Rio Surf International contest at Barra Da Tijuca, Brazil.
