The first algaroba tree in Hawai'i is to be cut down, The Advertiser reported on Oct. 23, 1919.

1896: The Council of State pardons Queen Lili'uokalani.

1903: Robert Wilcox, who led two failed rebellions that turned him into a charismatic folk hero, dies at age 48.

1949: The 176-day dock strike ends. Officials of six waterfront companies and the ILWU sign return-to-work agreements and ask the governor to end government seizure of Hawai'i docks.

1970: State Sen. Larry Kuriyama is murdered at his home. The Advertiser reported that the murder was committed with the brutal deliberation of a hired, professional killer.

2003: President Bush arrives in Hawai'i after a whirlwind trip to Asia.
