POLICE BEAT
Man accused of stealing police items

Advertiser Staff

Acting on a tip, Crime Reduction Unit officers from two different districts yesterday found and arrested a man in Makakilo who was suspected of stealing Honolulu Police Department-issued equipment.

The 38-year-old suspect was using a stolen vehicle and arrested on suspicion of auto theft, police said. During the arrest, officers discovered the police equipment that had been reported stolen Monday from the Makakilo area.

Police would not say what department equipment the suspect had allegedly taken, but are considering several charges against the man, including being a felon in possession of amunition.

Boyfriend accused in kidnapping

Bystanders came to the rescue of a Pearlridge woman who allegedly was being kidnapped by her 23-year-old former boyfriend yesterday afternoon, police said.

The 24-year-old woman was walking from her home about 4:15 p.m. and being followed by her former boyfriend, police said. As she passed the suspect's parked car, the suspect forced her inside and tried to drive away, police said.

Nearby bystanders blocked him and tried to open the car doors, but they were locked. When the woman reached over and turned off the car ignition, the suspect slashed her with a knife, police said. He then got the car moving again but ran over a tree trunk that serves as a road barrier, allowing the bystanders to pull the woman out through the open passenger window.

The suspect took off on foot with the woman's purse. Police found him several blocks away hiding under a parked car on Hekaha Street and arrested him.

The woman, who has a temporary restraining order against the suspect, was treated at a nearby hospital for puncture wounds.

Police are considering kidnapping, first-degree robbery and attempted murder charges.
