The Oct. 25, 1935, Advertiser reported on Pan American Airways’ new contract to fly mail from the West Coast to China.

1962: Gov. William Quinn and Sen. Daniel Inouye interrupt their election campaigns and fly to San Francisco for a briefing on the Cuban missile crisis. The briefing was for western governors and members of Congress and was conducted by representatives of the departments of defense and state.

1964: Plans are announced by five of the leading societies in the Chinese community for a cultural center in a two-block portion of the Kukui Redevelopment area downtown.

1971: The United Nations votes to seat mainland China on its own terms, expelling the delegates of Taiwan.

1979: Because the UPW strike involving school janitors and maintenance personnel is causing serious sanitation problems in restrooms, 32 public schools begin operating only two hours a day.
