HPD to conduct impaired driver checkpoints

Honolulu police will conduct impaired driver checkpoints today through Nov. 1 in an effort to deter alcohol- or drug-impaired drivers.As of Oct. 24, a total of 78 people have died on O'ahu as a result of 70 traffic accidents, the Honolulu Police Department said. That compares with 62 traffic-related deaths in 59 accidents during the same period last year.
Of this year's 70 fatal accidents, nine or 13 percent were determined to be alcohol- or drug-related.
