Local band 7SP takes goodwill trek for Mumbai

The band gave concerts, met with AIDS patients, prostitutes and others trapped in the country's slave trade and talked about Hawaiian culture. Some of the contact with the oppressed was filmed for a documentary entitled "The Beautiful Scandal of Amazing Grace."
"We actually used a pocket map quite a bit to show people where the state of Hawai'i is located," said Jonathan Calpito, 7SP founder and lead guitarist. "From there, we started talking about the concept of aloha and we even taught some of our sisters in India how to hula."
As part of an outreach strategy, the band used its music in Mumbai's red light district to convey messages of hope and escape. Many women are trapped in the prostitute district, believed to be one of the largest in the world, and have few options.
According to Calpito, the documentary also features Al Green, Blind Boys of Alabama, Andrae Couch and Ricky Scaggs, who focused on the concept of amazing grace and how those trapped in horrific conditions can still find God's grace.
The second leg of the tour began Wednesday, with 7SP touring Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi over the next two weeks.
The group is doing daily blogs at its Web site, www.7simplepieces.com, to keep its fans updated on its progress.
Besides Calpito, 7SP includes his daughter Stacy "Leiana" Kepa, lead singer; Clinton Aurio, rhythm guitarist; Clarence "Boy" Vierra Jr., bassist; and Jordan Kanoe, drummer.
