New HIFF weekend lineup: award-winning, top films

Advertiser Staff

Newly added Hawai'i International Film Festival screenings Sunday provide an opportunity to see all of the Festival's award-winning films, including the Halekulani Golden Orchid Winners and DHL Audience Award Winners, and to catch encore presentations of some of the most popular films of the last week.

Additionally, some highly received films have been included on the schedule for Saturday.

The list:

SATURDAY

"Americanese," written by Moanalua High School grad Eric Byler and Shawn Wong, author of the namesake novel, directed by Byler. A love story about people haunted by their cultural and romantic pasts. Part of HIFF's Western Showcase. Starring Chris Tashima, Allison Sie, Joan Chen, Kelly Hu and Sab Shimono. Screens at 1:15 p.m. Saturday at Regal Dole Cannery theaters.

"Samoan Wedding," a New Zealand film written by James Griffin and Oscar Kightley. Four immature bachelor buddies are banned from a wedding unless they can find proper dates to keep them in line. This leads the clowning first-generation Samoan New Zealanders in a search through hip hop clubs, office buildings and more risque scenarios. It's the first feature by Chris Graham, one of New Zealand's top music video directors. Actors Oscar Kightley and Teuila Blakely attended HIFF this year. Screens at 12:15 p.m. Saturday at Dole.

SUNDAY

"4:30" (NETPAC Award Winner), a Singapore film written by Royston Tan and Liam Yeo and directed by Tan. Told from the perspective of an 11-year-old Chinese boy and a suicidal thirtysomething Korean man. Screens at 3p.m. at Dole.

"Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna," added screening, 3:45 p.m., Dole

"Sharkwater" (Special Jury Mention, Halekulani Golden Orchid). "Passerine Bird," shot in 1961, is a patriotic film in collaboration between Vietnam and the Soviet Union; it has been rarely seen. "Sharkwater" written and directed by Rob Stewart is a wide-ranging ocean adventure in search of the truth about these predators and threats facing them. Screens with "Passerine Bird" at 4 p.m., Dole.

"King and the Clown," a South Korean hit about two jesters arrested for lampooning the king during the Chosun Dynasty. Added screening, 4:30 p.m., Dole

"Love for Share" (Halekulani Golden Orchid for Best Feature), an Indonesian film written and directed by Nia Dinata. Plot twists and references to the Aceh tsunami link the stories in Dinata's portrait of polygamous lifestyles in Jakarta. Screens at 6 p.m., Dole

"Na Kamalei: Men of Hula" (Best Hawaii Film, Honolulu Magazine Best Short Film and cause and f(x) Dream Digital honorees). "Na Kamalei" puts the spotlight on Robert Cazimero's male-only halau. Screens with "Majidee" and "Sunday Wind" at 6:15 p.m., Dole

"The Host" (DHL Audience Award for Best Feature), from South Korea. Another big hit in South Korea, this contemporary, satirical monster movie is written by Baek Chul-hyun and Bong Joon-ho and directed by Bong Joon-ho. 7:15 p.m., Dole

"Samoan Wedding," 7:30 p.m., Dole

"Time and Tide" (Halekulani Golden Orchid for Best Documentary), an American film written and directed by Julie Bayer and Josh Salzman (who planned to be married on O'ahu while here for HIFF). A group of expatriates returns to Tuvalu to witness profound changes driven by globalization and global warming. Screens with "China Blue" at 7:45 p.m., Dole
