Mother and infant uninjured in house fire

Advertiser Staff

A woman and her 2-month-old infant escaped unharmed from a house fire in Punchbowl this morning, fire officials said.

The blaze started about 10:44 a.m. at 264 Auwaiolimu Street.

Capt. Kenison Tejada, Fire Department spokesman, said the fire started on the first floor of the home and sent heavy smoke into the upstairs bedroom.

The woman, who was on the second floor, elected to stay in her upstairs bedroom with her baby and call 911 rather than attempt to navigate through the smoke. When firefighters arrived, neighbors were dousing a fire on the first floor with water.

The woman and her baby were found unharmed in the upstairs bedroom. Tejada said the cause of the fire and an estimate of damages are pending.
