Advertiser Staff

The state's tourism industry continued to slow in September, according to the latest data on visitor arrivals and spending issued today.

The number of arrivals totaled 559,143 for the month, unchanged from September 2005, according to the state Department of Economic Development and Tourism. Visitors spent $911 million during the month, down 1.6 percent from a year earlier.

An increase in visitors from the Mainland offset a decline in tourists from Japan and other foreign countries in September, DBEDT said.

For the first nine months of the year, visitor arrivals totaled 5.61 million, up a scant 0.1 percent from the first nine months of 2005. Visitor spending totaled $8.98 billion through September, up 3.8 percent from the same period a year earlier.
