Ken Watanabe to speak at HIFF tonight

Lesa Griffith
Advertiser Staff Writer

Fresh from flyfishing in Wyoming for a GQ Japan photo shoot, actor Ken Watanabe flew into town last night for a Hawai'i International Film Festival appearance. He will speak at Dole Regal Cinema at 6:30 tonight and will be followed by a screening of his breakout U.S. hit "The Last Samurai." (HIFF organizers asked him to choose a film representative of his oeuvre, and that's his pick.)

Tickets are sold out, but at a press conference at the Halekulani today HIFF director Chuck Boller said there may still be some spots available through the rush line.

At six-foot-two, the slender Watanabe cut an elegant figure at the press conference. Dressed in a white polo shirt, tan twill slacks and red suede loafers, he thoughtfully fielded questions from the media.

When asked what he thought of Clint Eastwood, the director of Watanabe's upcoming "Letters From Iwo Jima," the actor replied without hesitation, "The best director in the world."
