The Oct. 27, 1918, Pacific Commercial Advertiser reported that the "motorists of Honolulu will soon have the use of what is generally considered to be the most beautiful ocean drive in the all the country" with the planned opening of the Kalakaua Avenue extension from Kapi'olani park to the lighthouse.

1929: The first tri-motor passenger plane Hawaiian Airways Ltd. makes its initial flights over Honolulu. The Advertiser reported the plane flew from Ward Airport to John Rodgers Airport.

1940: More than 60,000 men in Hawai'i register for selective service — nearly 100 percent compliance.

1945: Hawai'i salutes the men and the ships of the Navy in a giant Navy Day celebration. Pearl Harbor was open to visitors for the first time since the war began and more than 65,000 people toured the base. Fleet Adm. Chester Nimitz also was honored.

1967: Vice President Hubert Humphrey arrives in Hawai'i for an overnight stop en route to the inauguration of Nguyen Van Thieu as South Vietnam's president.
