A pedestrian died yesterday after a pickup truck reversed from a driveway in Kalihi and hit him, police said.

The accident happened about 11:27 a.m. yesterday when the victim, described as 60 to 70 years old, was walking on a sidewalk on Dillingham Boulevard.

Police said a white GMC pickup truck, driven by a 62-year-old Kalihi man, reversed from the driveway at 1811 Dillingham Blvd. and ran over the victim. The driver then drove over the man again, apparently not knowing he had hit him, police and Emergency Medical Services officials said.

The man was pronounced dead at The Queen's Medical Center. For hours yesterday, police closed eastbound lanes of Dillingham Boulevard at Kalihi Street while they investigated the accident.

Also yesterday, a truck driven by a 47-year-old man crashed into a Makakilo garage. The driver and his teenage passenger were slightly injured.

The accident occurred about 2:30 a.m. when the truck drove into the garage on Awawa Street near Anipe'ahi Street.

The driver and a 14-year-old boy who was in the truck were taken to Queen's in serious but stable condition, said Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for the city's Emergency Medical Services Department.

Police are investigating whether the driver was drinking.

Meanwhile, police are urging the public to drive safely this weekend. Honolulu police will conduct impaired-driver checkpoints today through Wednesday in an effort to deter alcohol- or drug-impaired drivers.

As of Oct. 24, 79 people have died on O'ahu, according to police statistics. That compares with 62 traffic-related deaths during the same period last year. Of this year's fatal accidents, nine — or 13 percent — were determined to be alcohol- or drug-related.
