BYU-Hawai'i remains undefeated in volleyball

Noelle Filimoeatu had 16 kills to lead nationally ranked Brigham Young-Hawai'i to a 30-24, 30-28, 30-23 women's volleyball victory over Dixie State (Utah) last night at Cannon Activities Center.

The Seasiders, ranked No. 9 in the NCAA Division II, are 19-0. Dixie State is 12-14.

Christina Bobik added 10 kills. Lesina Funaki had 14 digs and Roseanne Vea 13 for the Seasiders.

Cidney Judkins led Dixie with 11 kills.

The Pacific West Conference champions are one of two undefeated teams in Division II — the other is No. 3 Hillsdale College (26-0) of Michigan.

BYUH hosts Chaminade in the final regular season match on Friday.

UH-HILO FALLS IN FOUR

Marissa Miller had 20 kills and Sarah Perry added 17 to lift Notre Dame de Namur to a 27-30, 30-23, 30-21, 30-26 victory over Hawai'i-Hilo last night in a Pacific West Conference women's volleyball match at Belmont, Calif.

Notre Dame de Namur, which got its first conference victory, is 12-21 overall and 1-12 in the PacWest. UH-Hilo is 5-16 and 3-9.

Taina Savage had 18 kills and Kaniu Hernandez 12 for the Vulcans.

The Argos got a season-high 70 kills and also had seven aces.

The teams play again tonight.


SOCCER

UH EARNS WAC BERTH

The University of Hawai'i women's soccer team lost 5-0 yesterday to Nevada at Reno, but clinched a spot in next week's Western Athletic Conference tournament.

The top six teams in the WAC standings advance to the tournament that starts Thursday in Reno. UH earned a berth when Idaho tied Louisiana Tech, 1-1, yesterday.

Aivi Luik scored two goals to lead Nevada, which out-shot the Rainbow Wahine, 21-4. UH, using a reshuffled lineup, went the first 60 minutes without a shot.

Hawai'i is 8-9-2 overall and 2-4 in the WAC. Nevada is 10-4-3 and 3-2-1.

The Rainbow Wahine end their regular season at Fresno State tomorrow.

HAWAI'I TEAMS LOSE

Andres Caballero scored two goals to help Notre Dame de Namur to a 5-1 victory over Hawai'i Pacific in a Pacific West Conference men's soccer match yesterday at Atherton Field in Kane'ohe.

Notre Dame de Namur is 12-5-2 overall and 8-1 in the PacWest. HPU is 7-7-2 and 2-5-2.

Gabe Sugar scored HPU's goal.

In other PacWest matches:

  • Notre Dame de Namur defeated HPU's women, 6-0, at Atherton Field. The Argos are 11-6-2 and 8-0-1. HPU is 4-8 and 2-5.

  • Grand Canyon defeated Chaminade, 5-0, in a men's match at Saint Louis School field. Grand Canyon is 13-6 and 8-1. The Silverswords are 0-15 and 0-9.

  • Grand Canyon's women shut out Chaminade, 7-0, at Saint Louis School field. The Antelopes are 5-13-1 and 5-3-1. The Silverswords are 0-11-1 and 0-8-1.


    BASEBALL

    WAIKIKI WINS, 11-4

    Mark Minicozzi drove in five runs, including three on a home run in the third inning, to help the Waikiki BeachBoys to an 11-4 victory over the North Shore Honu at Hans L'Orange Park last night in Hawaii Winter Baseball.

    Waikiki (10-7-1) also got homers from Devin Ivany and Jeff Cement. The Honu are 9-8-1.

    At Les Murakami Stadium, John Mayberry Jr. hit a three-run homer in the seventh inning to help the West Oahu CaneFires to an 8-1 victory over the Honolulu Sharks.

    West Oahu is 9-8. Honolulu is 7-12.

    Hawai'i Winter Baseball is holding free baseball clinics for youths ages 8 to 18 on Nov. 4 and 5 at Hans L'Orange Park.

    TENNIS

    USTA AT WAIKOLOA

    Two O'ahu teams are representing the Hawai'i Pacific Section in the USTA League 4.0 Adult National Championships this weekend at Hilton Waikoloa Village Resort on the Big Island. Waikoloa was also the site of the 4.5 nationals the weekend of the earthquake.

    The 4.0 nationals feature the top 34 teams (17 men's and 17 women's) in the country. The Hawai'i teams advanced by winning district and sectional championships. The men's team is captained by Ryan R. Perreira and Grant Migita. The women's captain is Lorretta Damas.

    USTA League, presented by Chrysler, is the world's largest recreational tennis league.


    BOXING

    PALOLO CARD TONIGHT

    The second annual Clint Shelton Memorial Match Event boxing card will be held tonight at Palolo District Park gym.

    Nine amateur bouts are scheduled on the card, which starts at 6:30 p.m.

    The event is held in honor of Clint Shelton, an amateur boxer in Hawai'i who died last year.
