Ka Palapala Po'okela winners named

Interior designer Mary Philpotts McGrath and lifestyle author Kaui Philpotts won big with the Book of the Year award for “Hawaiçi: A Sense of Place.” “Akua Hawaiçi: Hawaiian Gods and Their Stories,” by Kimo Armitage, illustrated by Solomon Enos, picked up the honor for Excellence in Children’s Hawaiian Culture.

The 2006 Ka Palapala Po'okela book awards, the Grammys of the local publishing industry, were announced Friday. Key winners:

  • The Samuel M. Kamakau Award for the Hawai'i Book of the Year went to the writing team of interior designer Mary Phiilpotts McGrath and lifestyle author Kaui Philpotts, for "Hawai'i, a Sense of Place," (Mutual Publishing). The book, the story of the evolution of Hawaiian decorative style, also won technical awards in photography.

  • The John Dominis Holt Award, given to an individual for lifetime contribution to Hawai'i book publishing, went to Claudia Cannon. She is general manager of the book division of distributor Booklines Hawaii/Islander group and president of the Hawai'i Book Publishers Association. Known for her generosity in sharing information and contacts in the industry and her dedication to building the local book market, Cannon is leaving the Islands for San Diego at the end of the year.

  • The Honolulu Advertiser's Ka Palapala Po'okela Reader's Choice Award went to "Paying the Price" by former Mauian Madge Walls (Dialogue Publishing), a novel full of twists and turns that involve the Maui real estate industry and a troubled family situation. The book received about 10 percent of the more than 1,000 votes cast.
