City recommends rail for mass transit solution

By Robbie Dingeman
Advertiser Staff Writer

Mayor Mufi Hannemann, city transportation engineers and consultants this afternoon announced the recommendation to go forward with a rail-transit alternative as a way to help ease Honolulu's growing gridlock.

Hannemann and members of the Honolulu High-Capacity Transit Corridor Project team made the announcement at a news conference at 2:30 p.m. in the Mayor's Conference Room.

The recommendation now goes to the nine-member City Council for action. A rail transit choice was expected by many but comes at a price tag of $3.6 billion.

The analysis includes an evaluation of four transit alternatives: no-build, improved bus system, managed lanes or toll roads; or rail transit and identifies the best transit solution for Honolulu based on criteria including cost, ridership, environmental and social impact, and the potential to reduce the growth of traffic congestion.
