Ching scores for Dynamo

Hale'iwa's Brian Ching scored a goal in stoppage time last night to give host Houston Dynamo a 2-0 victory over Chivas USA and a 3-2 aggregate score victory in the two-game MLS Western Conference semifinal playoff series.

Houston advances to face the Colorado Rapids in the Western Conference finals at home Sunday.

Houston led 1-0 after the 90th minute, when officials said there were two minutes stoppage time to play. Well into stoppage time, Dwayne De Rosario and Brian Mullan assisted on Ching's goal, a header from 3 yards out.

Ching is a Kamehameha Schools graduate.

FRESNO ST. STOPS UH

Anonea Lugo scored 27 seconds into overtime to lift Fresno State to the Western Athletic Conference regular season women's soccer title with a 1-0 victory over Hawai'i yesterday at Fresno, Calif.

Fresno State finished the regular season 12-5-2 overall and 6-0-1 in the WAC. Hawai'i is 8-10-2 and 2-5. The WAC tournament begins Thursday in Reno, Nev.

The Bulldogs finished the conference season without allowing a goal.

KAI PLAYS IN U.S. TIE

Kristine Lilly scored on a left-footed shot in the 72nd minute to give the U.S. women's soccer team a 1-1 tie with Denmark yesterday in the Peace Queen Cup at Gimhae, South Korea.

The United States is using the eight-nation tournament as a warmup for regional World Cup qualifiers next month in California.

Natasha Kai, a Kahuku High and University of Hawai'i alum, entered the game in the 72nd minute, but did not score.

DUNCAN SECOND

Hawai'i's Kanesa Duncan placed second in the women's division of the Hennessey's International Paddleboard Championships Saturday at Burleigh Heads, Australia.

Duncan completed the 17-kilometer course in 1 hour, 47 minutes, 28 seconds. Australia's Hayley Bateup won the women's division in 1:42:12.

Australia's Ky Hurst won the men's division in 1:27:13.

Australia's Jamie Mitchell, a five-time Moloka'i-to-O'ahu champion, did not enter.
