Clog forces 14,000 gallons of untreated sewage to spill

Advertiser Staff

Approximately 14,000 gallons of untreated sewage spilled onto the grounds of the city's Kailua Wastewater Treatment Plant last night after a piece of equipment became clogged.

The spill, which flowed onto the plant's driveway and into a drainage system on the grounds of the plant, occurred between 8:50 and 9:05 p.m., city officials said.

The spill was contained within the plant grounds and affected area was disinfected after the wastewater was removed.

Officials with the city's Department of Environmental Services said a new piece of equipment, called a "bar screen," apparently clogged and caused the spill.

The state Department of Health was notified and warning signs were to be posted this morning along the plant perimeter in the vicinity of the drainage system.

The Department of Health requires that wastewater spills of more than 1,000 gallons be reported publicly.
