Earthquake rocks Aleutian islands, no tsunami generated

Advertiser Staff

A powerful earthquake shook the central Aleutian islands early this morning, but federal scientists say it did not generate a Pacific-wide tsunami.

The 50-mile-deep quake, at 2:04 a.m. Hawaii time today, had a magnitude initially calculated at 6.0. It was located in the Fox Islands of the Aleutian chain, about 785 miles west-southwest of Anchorage and 30 miles southeast of Dutch Harbor.

The quake site is about 2,300 miles almost directly north of the Hawaiian Islands.
