Jury convicts man of manslaughter in fatal stabbing

BY KEN KOBAYASHI

A Circuit Court jury this afternoon rejected a murder verdict for a man who claimed he committed a fatal stabbing in self defense and convicted him of the lesser offense of manslaughter.

After deliberating for a total of more than two days, the jury found Kerry Sanders, 40, guilty of recklessly killing Jonathan Nunes, 32, on California Avenue in Wahiawa on Nov. 4, 2004.

Nunes was unarmed, but Kerry's defense was that he did not intend to kill the larger man and held up a kitchen knife to fend off a punch when Nunes was stabbed.

Sanders now faces a maximum 20-year term when he is sentenced by Circuit Judge Karl Sakamoto on Nov. 8.

The murder charge carried a mandatory life term with parole.
