UH-Hilo volleyball gets first win of 2006

Outside hitter Taina Savage and setter Desiree Agader led the University of Hawai'i-Hilo to its first win of the season with a 30-26, 30-16, 30-19 win over St. Martin's College yesterday in Lacey, Wash.

Savage, a senior from Tauranga, New Zealand, had 23 kills with five errors on 56 attempts for a .321 attack percentage. She also recorded 18 digs.

Agader, a freshman from Kekaha, made the most of her third start as the setter with 42 of the team's 50 assists. She also had 13 digs and two block assists.

Kahea Silva, a senior libero, added 28 digs.

The Vulcans are 1-7.

Shealun Campisi lead SMC with 11 kills and 15 digs.


SOCCER

CHAMINADE MEN WILL OPEN INAUGURAL SEASON

Chaminade will host the first NCAA soccer game in its 51-year history tomorrow when it hosts Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (Ariz.) in a men's match.

The game will start at 4 p.m. at Saint Louis School.

Chaminade and the other three local Division II schools added men's soccer, women's soccer and women's basketball this season.

BASIC BOATING CLASS OFFERED THIS MONTH

A three-session basic boating safety class is being offered by the Honolulu Sail & Power Squadron on Sept. 9, 16 and 23 at the Waikiki Yacht Club.

The sessions will cover boat types and terms, boat handling and elementary seamanship, sailing fundamentals, trailer boating, charts and aids to navigation, coastal and inland boating, marine radiotelephone, weather, regulations, equipment and safe operation.

Class will be limited to the first 20 people. Cost is $40 for boating manual. Each session will be from 8 a.m. to noon each day.


RUNNING

ENTRIES NOW ACCEPTED FOR MAUI TACOS 5K

Entries are being accepted for the Maui Tacos 5K Fun Run/Walk, which is Sept. 16 as part of Maui Marathon race week activities.

The 5K begins at 8 a.m. at Whalers Village in Ka'anapali.

The entry fee is $20 if postmarked before Sept. 10 and $25 thereafter.

Applications are available at all Maui Tacos locations, Runners Paradise in the Maui Mall, all Maui Jamba Juice locations, Footlocker in Kahului and Lahaina, Sports Authority, Athlete HI Magazine, at www.mauimara thon.com and by calling (808) 871-6441.

Entries also will be accepted at the Maui Marathon Sports and Fitness Expo, Sept. 15 from 1 to 8 p.m. at The Westin Maui.

There will be no race day entry permitted.

The 36th annual Maui Marathon and Maui Half Marathon will be held Sept. 17.
