Lam moves up in world tennis rankings

Advertiser Staff

Since April, Honolulu's Chris Lam has soared 642 spots in the world tennis rankings, to No. 881. The UCLA graduate has been touring full-time since January. Lam is No. 71 among Americans going into the fall season, which concludes with three Hawai'i tournaments.

Lam reached the semifinals of the Palmen Motors Pro Futures event last month in Kenosha, Wis. That finish moved him up 112 spots in the rankings. He reached the quarterfinals of three Futures events earlier this year.

Lam was home-schooled in Hawai'i and graduated from UCLA in 2005. He was part of the Bruins' 2005 NCAA championship team and was ranked as high as 19th nationally.

Lam's next five tournaments are in California. The first four are $10,000 Futures events, and the last is a $50,000 Challenger, Oct. 16, in Calabasas. He returns home in November for the $15,000 Waikoloa Futures, the $15,000 Honolulu Futures and the $50,000 Wailea Challenger.

Lam is planning a weeklong tennis camp for Hawai'i juniors next year. He is currently seeking sponsors. His backers have set up an Equipment Sponsorship Program to help him. Contact tedmonlaw@comcast.net for more information.
