Rainbow Wahine give Shoji 900th victory

Dave Shoji's volleyball legacy took on another milestone Saturday night when Hawai'i swept Colorado to give the Hawai'i coach his 900th victory.

The 32-30, 30-23, 30-20 victory gives Shoji a record of 900-157-1 in his 32nd season, with four national titles. He is the second Division I women's coach to reach 900 after UCLA's Andy Banachowski, whose team will play Hawai'i Sunday in the final match of the 19th Hawaiian Airllines Wahine Volleyball Classic.

In yesterday's opener, 10th-ranked UCLA overcame fifth-ranked Florida in the first two games and flattened the Gators in the third to score a 31-29, 30-28, 30-15 upset.

The 'Bows' latest win, played out before 5,953 at Stan Sheriff Center, was not worthy of much imitation. But after getting swept by Florida Friday, it served its purpose for the Rainbow Wahine (3-1).

They won a ragged first game that saw Colorado surge ahead 9-5 only to have the Rainbows roll by and take a 22-18 advantage. The 'Buffs caught UH at 24. Six ties and a game point for each team later Hawai'i won after libero Jayme Lee's ninth dig.

Jamie Houston had 10 kills in the game and finished with a match-high 17. Kari Gregory added eight kills and eight blocks, and hit .500. Lee had 18 digs.

The Rainbow Wahine pulled away for good early in Game 2, riding two stuffs and a Houston kill to a 12-8 lead with Tara Hittle serving. They pushed their advantage to six (20-14) on Hittle's next serve and played keepaway the rest of the game.

Colorado caught Hawai'i three times in the final game, but had no answer for a 9-0 'Bows' run, with Kanoe Kamana'o serving, that put them up, 24-15.
