Three-time defending O'ahu Interscholastic Association West champion Mililani stumbled early and paid for it against visiting Wai'anae last night.

Quarterback Ben McQuown ran for two touchdowns and connected with Nathan Malaki for an early 72-yard scoring pass as the Seariders upset No. 7 Mililani, 28-13, in the OIA Red West season-opener for both teams.

"It was nice to travel and come away with a win, especially against a tough team like Mililani," Wai'anae coach Danny Matsumoto said. "It's always nice to open with a win, but gosh, this is only the first game."

Wai'anae (1-2 overall, 1-0 OIA Red West) looked sharp on offense, jumping out to a 14-0 halftime lead, and strong on defense, holding Mililani running back Jordan Torres to 85 yards on 16 carries.

"We had no discipline at all, and we didn't come out to play," said Torres, who entered last night averaging 214 yards per game in two preseason contests. "We can play a lot better. We were fooling around too much, nobody was doing their right jobs, people were slacking. We just have to work harder."

It didn't take long for Wai'anae to pounce on Mililani (2-1, 0-1). On the first play from scrimmage, McQuown hit Malaki on a slant for a 72-yard catch-and-run TD.

"Wai'anae just outplayed us," Mililani coach James Millwood said. "They played a good football game."

Millwood said Wai'anae played the type of football the Trojans were used to playing.

"They ran the ball well, play-actioned well, and we weren't very well prepared for that," Millwood said. "I don't think we tested them enough (with the running game). When we went after them in the opening of the third quarter, we did well."

Wai'anae built its lead to 14-0 in the second quarter on McQuown's 10-yard bootleg touchdown run.

"This gives us momentum for the next week," said McQuown, who completed 7 of 12 passes for 129 yards. "People wrote us off early, but our team performed well."

Mililani answered with quarterback Rustin Funakoshi's 1-yard run and Colin Lund's extra-point kick to close to 14-7 with 7:22 left in the third quarter, but the Seariders responded on their next possession. Wai'anae ran the ball nine consecutive times ending with Danny Kekoanui's 5-yard touchdown run. The kick failed and Wai'anae led 20-7.

The Seariders increased their lead in the third quarter behind the scrambling ability of McQuown. On fourth-and-18 on Mililani's 30, McQuown dropped back, pumped the ball once, and took off down the left sideline for a 30-yard touchdown.

"I saw the two defensive ends coming from the outside and the hole was wide open," McQuown said. "I had to make a big play. It was fourth down, and I couldn't get tackled."

Mililani refused go down quietly, scoring on the final play of the game when Funakoshi hit Torres for a 5-yard touchdown. Mililani did not attempt the extra point.
