The Sept. 3, 1886, Pacific Commercial Advertiser reported on celebrations for Princess Lili'uokalani's 48th birthday the previous day.

1883: St. Louis College (now Saint Louis School) is established.

1945: An estimated 200,000 people watch Honolulu's VJ-Labor Day parade.

1951: The Kailua approach road to Nu'uanu Pali is opened with officials saying it's the beginning of Windward O'ahu development.

1983: Del Monte ends its pineapple canning operation in Hawai'i, which means the eventual loss of about 3,000 acres of pineapple land on Moloka'i.

2005: William Rehnquist, the 16th chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, dies at the age of 80.
