Kamehameha holds off Farrington by inches, 7-6

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

An interleague clash between two perennial O'ahu high school football powerhouses last night turned into a game of inches, as Kamehameha held off visiting Farrington, 7-6.

The Warriors, tied for No. 4 with Farrington in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 football poll of media and coaches, improved to 3-0 overall.

The Governors fell to 2-1, but only after missing an extra point attempt with 5:21 remaining and coming up short on fourth-and-inches on the Kamehameha 30-yard line with 1:38 left.

"It's hard to say, I didn't see it too well from where I was," Farrington coach Randall Okimoto said of the final, crucial spot. "It looked close, but that's the way the game goes."

Very little separated the two teams all night in a hard-hitting, high-quality contest that more resembled a state tournamment championship than an early season nonleague matchup. A capacity crowd of about 3,000 at Kamehameha's scenic Kunuiakea Stadium was on the edge of its collective seat for most of the night.

"It was a high-intensity game," Warriors coach Kanani Souza said. "A spectator's delight."

The game was a scoreless duel for 39 minutes, as both teams came up with countless huge plays on defense — including 10 sacks by Kamehameha and six by the Govs. The Warriors finally broke through on Jordan Rego's 12-yard touchdown run with 8:27 remaining.

Even that drive was kept alive by a conversion on fourth-and-4 from the Farrington 32.

The Govs answered with an 11-play, 80-yard scoring drive that was kept alive by a 12-yard quarterback scramble by Elijah Filifili on fourth-and-5 from his own 48.

However, the extra point attempt was wide right by about a foot.

Farrington's defense then came through again, forcing a three-and-out and giving the offense the ball back with 3:20 left. A spectacular 13-yard catch by Maeli Siliga set up the fourth-and-inches, but Filifili was stuffed at the line of scrimmage.

Okimoto said it was Kamehameha's secondary that caused problems earlier in the game.

"Most of the (Warriors') sacks were coverage sacks; there wasn't too much breakdown in protection," Okimoto said. "I'm disappointed in our offense; we expected to score more. But their secondary did a great job."

Kamehameha safety Rykin Enos, who had one of the Warriors' two interceptions, said the Warriors were up to the challenge of facing a Governors offense that scored 98 points in their first two games.

"Our coaches did a good job preparing us well for this week," Enos said. "Our team was focused to play. If we cover our guys, if everybody does their job, guarantee we'll get a sack."

Souza was equally impressed with Farrington's defense.

"Boy, they're good," Souza said. "They did a super job."
