All 'Ewa-bound lanes shut down on H-1

Advertiser Staff

State transportation officials are shutting down all six lanes of 'ewa-bound traffic of the H-1 freeway after a military truck with a crane struck and damaged the 'Aiea pedestrian overpass between 'Aiea Heights Drive and Kaamilo Street.

H-1 traffic will be diverted onto Moanalua Road and Kamehameha Highway, Ishikawa said.

The collision to the center portion of the overpass occurred about 1:45 p.m., DOT spokesman Scott Ishikawa said. He did not immediately know the clearance of the overpass.

"You can see the steel rebar sticking out," Ishikawa said. "The damage is pretty extensive."

Initially, transportation officials shut down the three right-hand lanes of the H-1 and diverted traffic to the three left-hand lanes. But further inspection of the overpass requires them to shut down the entire freeway, Ishikawa said.

An investigation also will be initiated to find out if the driver of the military vehicle followed proper procedures, Ishikawa said.
