Hedin third in Jr. World wrestling

Advertiser Staff

Kailua's Dany Hedin won a bronze medal for the second straight year at the Junior World Championships Friday in Guatemala City, Guatemala.

Hedin placed third in the 121-pound division. She opened with victories over Mizuho Shibata of Japan (0-1, 5-1, 3-1) and Andreea Simon of Romania, (2-1, 6-1). Hedin was defeated by Alena Filipava of Belarus (0-3, 0-2) in the semifinals. Hedin then pinned Jillian Gallays of Canada for third.

"It was a tough tournament," Hedin said. "The weight class was tough and anything could happen. I didn't wrestle to my expectations. My first two matches went well. I didn't perform in the semis like I wanted to, but I came back and earned my bronze."

Honolulu's Sadie Kaneda was defeated in the wrestle-back rounds and placed ninth in the 105-pound weight class. Kaneda opened with a victory over Dany Cespedez of Peru (1-1, 2-4, 3-0). In her next match, she was pinned by Sofia Mattsson of Sweden. After Mattsson qualified for the gold-medal match, Kaneda became eligible for the wrestle-back. Kaneda was beaten in the next bout by Genevieve Haley of Canada (2-5, 2-2).

SEASIDERS LOSE TWICE

Jessica Michie scored in the ninth minute of the second overtime period as Dixie State College (St. George, Utah) edged Brigham Young-Hawai'i, 2-1, yesterday in a women's match at BYUH Field.

Tilly Soutwick also scored for the visiting Rebels (4-0).

Heidi Bushman scored for the Seasiders in their first-ever match.

BYUH, which outshot Dixie State 12-10, took a 1-0 lead in the 79th minute. Bushman, who ironically transferred to BYUH from Dixie State, got taken down by the Rebel goalie on a breakaway. Bushman then booted the ensuing penalty kick into the upper left corner of the goal.

Also yesterday, Rafael Ferreira scored the go-ahead goal in the 83rd minute as Embry-Riddle (Prescott, Ariz.) defeated the host BYUH men's team, 3-2.

Rosendo Orozco and Dane Mickelsen also scored for Embry Riddle (3-3-1).

Nickolas Vichrilli and Brian Noguera scored for the Seasiders (0-1).
