Schofield soldier killed in Iraq

By William Cole
Advertiser Military Writer

An 18-year-old soldier from Jackson, Mo. is the first Schofield Barracks soldier to be killed on a deployment to Iraq by more than 7,000 25th Infantry Division troops.

Jeremy Shank was killed early yesterday morning, the Southeast Missourian newspaper reported.

Schofield Barracks is precluded from releasing the soldier's name because federal law requires the passage of 24 hours from notification of family to public release of information. The Defense Department is expected to release the name today.

"We do acknowledge a 25th Infantry Division soldier has been killed," said Schofield spokesman Kendrick Washington.

The Hawai'i contingent recently landed in northern Iraq for a yearlong deployment and are part of Task Force Lightning in cities including Tikrit, Kirkuk and Hawija.
