3rd man arrested in fatal beating

By Peter Boylan

The third suspect wanted in connection with Friday's horrific beating death of a Wai'anae man turned himself in to police yesterday and was arrested on suspicion of murder in the second degree.

Homicide detectives were in Wai'anae looking for the 32-year-old man when he gave himself up at the Honolulu Police Department's Beretania Street headquarters shortly after 11:30 a.m., police said.

Two other men wanted in connection with the beating turned themselves in Tuesday night. Police had planned to sweep the Wai'anae coast looking for the three men but had to change plans after an accident yesterday shutdown the H-1 Freeway's westbound lanes in 'Aiea.

The first two men, ages 22 and 35, turned themselves in at the main police station on Beretania Street at about 8 p.m. Tuesday. They were booked on suspicion of second-degree murder and are being held in a police cell block pending charges.

A conviction for second-degree murder carries a mandatory prison term of life with the possibility of parole.

None of them has been charged.

The two younger men have one misdemeanor conviction each for disorderly conduct stemming from a Dec. 18, 2005, incident. Both were found guilty and paid a $100 fine on March 10.

The 35-year-old has seven prior convictions: three for felony car theft, one for a felon in possession of a firearm and three misdemeanors.

The trio are suspected in the beating death of Roger Haudenshild, 46, in the parking lot of the Waianae Market.

Police believe Haudenshild was riding his bicycle near the Wai'anae McDonald's when he got into a traffic altercation with the 22-year-old man, who was driving a sports car. A fistfight broke out, and after the fight the man said he would return with "his boys," police said.

Haudenshild rode his bike about 100 yards to the market. A short time later, a white Ford sedan pulled into the lot and three men jumped out, police said.

The men threw Haudenshild's girlfriend, Theresa Tucay, to the ground and then savagely beat Haudenshild, police said.

Tucay said Haudenshild was unconscious, but the men continued to stomp on his head and kick him.

Haudenshild was taken to the Wai'anae Coast Comprehensive Health Center, where he died.
