ISLAND LIFE SHORTS
Hug your tutu on her special day

Advertiser Staff

Sunday is Grandparents Day — remember your tutu, your ojichan, your popo, your gramps. Here are some grand facts from the Census Bureau:

  • There are about 56 million grandparents in the U.S.

  • Nearly 6 million grandparents have grandchildren younger than 18 living with them.

  • About 2.4 million grandparents are responsible for most of the basic needs — food, shelter and clothing — of one or more of the grandchildren who live with them.

  • Of these grandparent-caregivers, 1.7 million are married, 1.4 million are in the labor force, and 700,000 are disabled.

    FRIENDS OF LA PIETRA

Jimmy Borges and Shari Lynn — Hawai'i's answer to Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme — have rounded up their talented friends and proteges for Sunset Jazz, Etc., the annual La Pietra fundraiser. Listen to the two veterans, along with Azure McCall, Kimberlei Bradford, Ginai, Sonya Mendez and DeShannon Higa, on the girls school's great lawn at 6 p.m. Sunday. You get that lineup — plus wine, coffee and dessert — for just $30 ($240 for a table of eight). For reservations, call 924-7515.

    FINAL WORD

"It's not polished and it's a little more rough. Maybe that represents who I am."

Fergie | the Black Eyed Peas singer on her debut solo album, "The Duchess" (out on Sept. 19) in Entertainment Weekly.
